Technology and Experience NIDEK has dedicated itself for many years in the R&D and production of high precision diagnostic equipment. With technologies like lasers, ultrasound and optoelectronics, NIDEK contributes to the progress of healthcare.

Patient-Friendly IOLs
Regarding insertion of an IOL into the patient’s eye during cataract surgery, the smaller the incision, the better. NIDEK offers the optimal IOL shape, material, and surface treatment to promote a fast recovery in patients.

Comprehensive Solutions for Ophthalmology
NIDEK provides not only surgical and diagnostic equipment, but also ophthalmic pharmaceuticals to meet a wide range of needs in ophthalmology.

Entry into Dermatology
NIDEK developed dermatology lasers based on the technology cultivated in ophthalmology. Skin concerns such as congenital spots, wrinkles, and problems caused by dermatosis can be treated.

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are produced in a Class 100* clean room. (* Cleanliness of having less than 100 particles of dust of over 0.5 micron in size per square foot. Normal households have 2 to 3 million.)

UV-cut IOLs are produced in the same color as the lens of the human eye, providing increased patient comfort.

NIDEK started the distribution of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals in 1998.

With cooperation from doctors and patients, clinical trials are conducted to confirm the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals under development.

3 Ways of Myopia Correction

Eyes with myopia focus light in front of the retina, and wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses has been the traditional way to adjust the focal point to improve vision. Today, we have 3 main surgical methods for correcting myopia.
*LASIK has not received clinical approval in Japan.

RK(Radial Keratotomy)
RK has been practiced for approximately 40 years, the longest history in today’s myopia correction surgery. It changes the curvature of the corneal center by making radial incisions in the corneal periphery.

PRK(Photorefractive Keratectomy)
PRK was devised in the United States in 1983. The very thin corneal epithelium is removed and the cornea surface is irradiated with an excimer laser, flattening it.

Corneal flap

LASIK(Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK is the newest surgical method, developed in the 1990s. A corneal flap is created using a special tool called a keratome, the stroma under the flap is ablated with an excimer laser, and the flap is returned to its original position.

Over 90% of refractive surgery for myopia in Japan is excimer laser surgery. NIDEK's EC-5000 Excimer Laser System offers smooth corneal ablation using unique irradiation technology, receiving acclaim from countless doctors worldwide.
