Gamagori, JAPAN, -- NIDEK CO., LTD. Announced that it has received approval from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for its advanced refractive surgery laser system the ? NIDEK EC-5000 Excimer laser and MK-2000 Microkeratome. This milestone clears the way for NIDEK to perform LASIK surgery and is the first and only system, which received MHLW approval in Japan.

“This approval shows our system’s superiority and reliability, as we continue to deliver commercially innovative refractive surgery solutions to users around the world, especially in Japan,” said Motoki Ozawa, Vice President of NIDEK CO., LTD.

The NIDEK EC-5000 Excimer laser was granted approval from the MHLW for PTK (Phototherapeutic Keratectomy) surgery in April 1998, and also for PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) surgery in January 2000.

Laser vision correction procedures have increased by 30% on a yearly average since 2000, and 75,000 eyes received laser vision correction procedures in 2005. Market estimates state that over 100,000 eyes will undergo laser vision correction in 2006. The number of installed Excimer lasers in Japan is about 200, and half of those are NIDEK’s EC-5000.

With MHLW’s approval, NIDEK is planning to conduct EC-5000 users’ meetings for LASIK surgery in Japan, promoting EC-5000’s safe and effective use in laser vision correction surgery.
