NIDEK CO., LTD. is pleased to report on the progress of the Orbis International artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening project in Vietnam. This project has successfully screened over 14,000 people living with diabetes. This achievement was possible through the combined functionalities of Orbis’s Cybersight AI platform and NIDEK’s fundus cameras.
The project was launched in July 2024 and, by the end of August 2025, a total of 14,463 patients had been imaged and screened using the NIDEK fundus cameras and Cybersight AI across all six project sites. From these patient screenings, 3,582 patients (24.8%) were identified by AI with signs of referable diabetic retinopathy or/and glaucoma or/and macular abnormalities. These patients were promptly referred to ophthalmologists for further assessment and appropriate management. Remarkably, this project has enabled the early detection of diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases in over 3,500 patients, marking an important step toward preventing future vision loss.
Additionally, through this project, Orbis has provided educational training on fundus photography, Cybersight AI, early detection of diabetic retinopathy, and timely patient management. Orbis has also helped to raise public awareness of retinal diseases. These efforts help enhance the knowledge, skills, and services of local eye care professionals, and promote technology adoption and patient communication, thereby improving eye care within the community. “This aligns perfectly with NIDEK’s mission of improving eye care worldwide, and we look forward to continuing to support this initiative.” says Motoki Ozawa, President and CEO of NIDEK CO., LTD.
