NIDEK’s AL-Scan received the “reddot design award 2012”

NIDEK CO., LTD. proudly announced that the Optical Biometer AL-Scan received the “reddot design award 2012” which is one of the three world’s design award in German. (*1)
The reddot design award is an important design award given by a German organization: Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen Design Center since 1954. The reddot design award has been awarded to the product designs, which are commercialized in past 2 years. Winning designs are selected according to the strict criteria, in the point of innovative conception, functionality, Human Engineering, Ecology, and Duration. The review committee consists of 3 categories, and the AL-Scan was awarded as “Life-science and Medicine” category in “Product Design Category”. In this year’s selection, 4,515 designs from 1,800 companies / 58 countries challenged to win the award in the Product Design Category.
This reddot design award is two consecutive years for NIDEK products, following the Auto Lensmeter LM-1800PD in 2011. The AL-Scan team said, “We designed and developed the AL-Scan with the aim for harmony with equipment’s appearance and enough functions”. Our designer commented, “The designer’s intention was to show the dynamic of the product in a maximum compactness. The product was expressed by its appearance in both the high technical level with a sensation of compactness.” Motoki Ozawa, President and CEO of NIDEK said, “This award-winning is great encouragement for us to continue to develop fine products with function-rich and high design quality for every patients who are suffering eye diseases.”
About the AL-Scan
The Optical Biometer AL-Scan is the ophthalmic equipment, which measures the axial length and corneal curvature radius. The measurement data are useful for selecting suitable IOLs for patients’ visual acuity in the case of replacing the lens of the eye in the cataract surgery. The AL-Scan also measures highly reproducible data by its non-contact measurement method.
